Culloden. Old Leanach
Cottage |
|
Unfortunately,
it was a brilliant day when we visited the Culloden
battlefield. Windswept and drizzly is far more appropriate. |

Culloden. Patch of Heather |

Close
by Culloden is Balnuaran of Clava with two large chambered
tombs and a ring cairn—part of a Neolithic linear
cemetery running along a terrace of the River Nairn.
All three are surrounded by a circle of upright stones
and there are single standing stones in the immediate
neighbourhood. |

Balnuaran of Clava. Central
Ring Cairn |
|
The
ring cairn differs fromthe others in that there is no
passageway leading to the central space and was apparently
never roofed, so it was unlikely to have been a tomb
although it undoubtedly had some role to play in the
funerary (or post funerary) rituals that took place
here. |

Corrimony. Clava Cairn |
|
A
similar but isolated tomb can be found at Corrimony
in GlenUrquart. Here the roof of the passage still survives
and one of the capstones of the corbelled roof can still
be seen (although not in situ) lying on top
of the cairn. |
